Swara Vocal Ensemble: Suomi – A contemporary Finnish a cappella concert
On Saturday 16 December, the Swara choir’s Finland-themed Christmas concert, combining music and photography, will ring out at the Notre-Dame du Sacre Coeur church in the Etterbeek neighbourhood of Brussels. Alongside Finnish contemporary compositions, a series of photographs has been compiled to reflect each piece of music.
Eeva-Mari Haikala’s exhibition at V/MSP gallery
Eeva-Mari Haikala’s new piece Hamish and Eeva deals with the emotions awakened by Welsh painter Gwen John’s (1876-1939) letters and diaries. These texts describe the painter’s intense, almost obsessive love affair with sculptor Auguste Rodin. Haikala’s performance draws from the physical and mental strains relationships can cause with a focus on themes of loneliness and longing.
Leuven International Short Film Festival
Leuven International Short Film Festival and its theme of this year, Finland, culminate the centenary year’s celebrations on 2–9 December 2017.
This year the 23rd edition of the festival includes two collections of Finnish short films in its programme. The highlighted films offer a multifaceted glimpse to Finnish filmmaking from suspense to humour and animation.
Carita Savolainen’s exhibition at the Embassy of Finland
In December, to celebrate Finland’s 100 years of independence, the Finnish embassy in Brussels will host Finnish artist Carita Savolainen’s project Passing on Looks. The project aims at suggesting a status report on a situation, and account for the way the perception of Finland has evolved in another European culture, that of Belgium; and reversely on the way Finland’s image of a foreign culture, the Belgian one, has changed. The project seeks to link image and text, as well as sound and movement, to enable a variety of perceptions.
Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra – Finland 100
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Embassy of the Netherlands, and the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux organise a Finland 100 jubilee concert in Rotterdam’s De Doelen concert house in November. The programme includes Finnish inspiration from traditional folk music to Aulis Sallinen. The chamber music concert musicians are Maija Reinikainen and Eefje Habraken (violin), Galahad Samson (viola), Daniel Petrovitsch (cello) ja Juan Zurutuza (piano).
