TelepART: Kalevi Aho & Kalle Kalima
Ghent Festival of Flanders has commissioned Finnish leading composer Kalevi Aho to write a new work for the 60th anniversary of the festival. Mearra is especially created for Anneleen Lenaerts, solo harpist of the Vienna Philharmonic and considered one of Belgium’s most internationally prominent musicians. Next to Lenaerts, Kalle Kalima will perform his Louhi for electric guitar and strings. These two works will be performed during the prestigious opening concert of the Ghent Festival in St. Bavo’s Cathedral, and will at the same time open the autumn term of the Finland 100 celebratory year in Belgium.
TelepART: John Court
John Court creates simple but strong artworks that often last hours. His output includes performance, sculpture and video, but he considers all his work to be fundamentally concerned with drawing, in that drawing connects the elements of line, movement, space and time. John Court is invited to be part of the next edition of SIGNAL in Brussels, taking place 27 September until 1 October 2017. He will create a new durative performance, repeating an action, connecting the writing of characters, words or numbers with the physical connection, to a sculpture that Court will have built in-situ using recycled material. This performance is about overcoming mental blocks, specifically in a context of education.
TelepART: Eero Yli-Vakkuri
For the sixth SIGNAL festival, taking place in Brussels 27 September until 1 October 2017, the festival curators have invited Finnish artist Eero Yli-Vakkuri for three performances:
Horse talk taxi:
A cart led by a horse going around Brussels during the festival with specialists/intellectuals talking to its passengers about Brussels, the city and horses.
Riot gear demonstration – Workshop:
An officer of the mounted police gives a three-hour talk about his work, his relation to the horse, the City and its inhabitants.
Parade of the other kings:
Two officers of the mounted police are in a green area of Brussels with their horses, to get in contact with local inhabitants, to discuss, take care of the animal, and maybe go for a ride/parade in the neighbourhood.
TelepART: Maria Kalaniemi and Eero Grundström
Finnish accordionist Maria Kalaniemi and harmonium artist Eero Grundström will tour the Benelux with a concert in Brussels on 6 October, and workshops and concerts in Rotterdam and The Hague 7-8 October. Kalaniemi and Grundström will perform Tango Trousers, a video concert related to their new duo album Svalan, which rose to the top of the World Music Charts Europe in July 2017. The Tango trousers video project was carried out together with photographer and video artist Elina Brotherus.
TelepART: Kamus Quartet
In their fast developing international career Kamus Quartet will tour the Netherlands with three concerts in October 2017. The concerts include their debut at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. In these concerts, Kamus Quartet will play an all-Nordic programme and celebrate Finland’s 100th anniversary with a premier of Sebastian Fagerlund’s string quartet in Concertgebouw.
